Canva is recruiting a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Surry Hills to train diffusion models and deploy low-latency generative image tools.

Canva’s Magic Studio AI team is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Surry Hills. You will train, fine-tune, and optimize state-of-the-art diffusion models and multimodal generative vision models powering Canva’s AI creative tools used by millions worldwide.

As a key member of the team at Canva in Sydney, NSW, you will play a central role in driving excellence, upholding top-tier Australian industry standards, and contributing directly to the strategic milestones of one of the nation’s premier employers.

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities

In this critical role, your operational duties and key performance responsibilities will encompass:

• Train, fine-tune,: Train, fine-tune, and distill diffusion architectures and vision-language models using PyTorch.
• Optimize inference: Optimize inference latency using TensorRT, ONNX, and custom CUDA kernels for real-time browser generation.
• Design scalable: Design scalable model training data pipelines across GPU clusters on AWS and GCP.
• Collaborate with: Collaborate with product designers and frontend teams to create intuitive generative workflows.

Required Qualifications, Licenses & Experience

To be successful in this position at Canva, candidates are expected to satisfy the following essential selection criteria:

• Mandatory Qualification: Master or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or Mathematics.
• Relevant Experience: Minimum 5+ Years of verified industry experience in Australia or recognized overseas equivalence.
• 5+ years commercial experience developing and deploying deep learning models in production.
• Extensive experience with PyTorch, distributed training (DeepSpeed/FSDP), and diffusion models.
• Track record deploying low-latency deep learning models serving millions of daily API requests.

• Competitive Remuneration: AU$175,000 – AU$220,000 per year + standard Australian Superannuation (11.5%).
• Package $175,000 – $220,000 + Canva employee equity options + super.
