Role Overview & Strategic Impact

As a Assistant Chief Engineer at CBRE, you will provide vital operational leadership, technical execution, and client management across dedicated facilities and corporate real estate portfolios in San Jose, United States. Operating within our GWS Segment (Engineering/Maintenance, Facilities Management), your primary focus will be optimizing day-to-day asset performance, mitigating operational risks, and driving continuous improvement.

Operational Context: Technical Infrastructure & Facility Engineering

CBRE Technical Services delivers engineering reliability across commercial high-rises, research laboratories, manufacturing sites, and critical infrastructure. Engineers and technicians execute proactive planned preventative maintenance (PPM), building automation system (BAS) calibration, power factor correction, and mechanical equipment lifecycle overhauls, ensuring compliance with local building codes, OSHA standards, and environmental sustainability mandates.

Team members in this discipline combine deep technical domain expertise with client-focused execution. Whether managing complex real estate transactions, executing critical engineering protocols, or administering enterprise service agreements, you will operate within a mature governance model backed by CBRE’s global knowledge network.

Key Responsibilities & Scope of Work

In this capacity, your daily workflows and strategic contributions will center on the following core deliverables:

  • Follow all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency, and company directives related to building operations and work safety.
  • Lead operations, assign work orders, and provide technical and procedural training of coworkers and subcontractors. Arranges for subcontractors as needed.
  • Consult with clients to schedule preventive maintenance during downtime to cut business interruption and inconvenience.
  • Plan a preventive maintenance program to ensure that building machinery and systems meet or exceed their rated life.
  • Check building systems including fire alarms, HVAC, and plumbing to ensure the operation of equipment is within design capabilities and achieves environmental conditions prescribed by the client.
  • Oversee and inspect the work performed by engineering staff to make sure the work is complete; equipment is functioning properly, and client space is in great working condition.
  • Respond to emergency situations and ask for help when needed.
  • Apply advanced knowledge to seek and develop new, better methods for accomplishing both individual and department objectives.
  • Ensure strict compliance with health, safety, environmental (HSE), and regulatory statutory requirements across all operational activities.
  • Prepare comprehensive reporting dashboards, executive briefing summaries, and asset condition documentation for client and internal stakeholders.

Candidate Profile & Experience Requirements

To qualify for the Assistant Chief Engineer position, candidates are evaluated based on their hands-on background, technical credentials, and operational competencies:

  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years (60 months) of verified experience directly applicable to engineering/maintenance, facilities management or related operational disciplines.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or trade school diploma; a combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Building Engineer or Assistant/Chief Engineer, or job-related experience.
  • Prior shift manager or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Multi-trade experience.
  • CERTIFICATES and/or LICENSES
  • Additional certification in one or more of the following is a plus: electrical, mechanical, HVAC/R and refrigeration systems, process controls, mechanical power transmissions, painting, plumbing, carpentry, or engine repair. Certifications/licenses as may be required by local or state jurisdictions.
  • OTHER SKILLS and/or ABILITIES
  • Technical & Analytical Aptitude: Familiarity with computerized enterprise management platforms, building telemetry, or financial modeling tools relevant to the specialization.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Exceptional communication skills with the demonstrated ability to articulate complex operational matters clearly to non-technical clients and executive teams.

Work Environment, Schedule & Location Structure

This role is based out of San Jose, United States. The operational arrangement is structured as Full-time under a On-site Dedicated (San Jose, United States) format. Candidates will work within professionally managed corporate client environments or modern commercial centers equipped with enterprise safety and productivity tools.
