Train and assess apprentices in heavy commercial diesel mechanics, electronic diagnostics, and hydraulic systems in state-of-the-art workshops.
TAFE NSW is seeking an experienced Heavy Commercial Automotive Trainer to join the automotive trades faculty at our Maitland/Newcastle campus. You will deliver hands-on practical training and competency-based assessments to apprentices working across heavy transport, bus, and mining fleet sectors.

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities
In this critical role, your operational duties and key performance responsibilities will encompass:
- Deliver interactive: Deliver interactive classroom theory and hands-on workshop training for AUR31120 Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
- Instruct apprentices: Instruct apprentices on heavy vehicle diesel engine overhauls, pneumatic braking systems, and electronic diagnostics.
- Maintain compliant: Maintain compliant competency-based assessment records adhering to Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) standards.
- Ensure workshop: Ensure workshop safety compliance, hazard reporting, and tool tagging in training facilities.
- Liaise with: Liaise with transport industry employers and group training organizations (GTOs) on apprentice progression.
Required Qualifications, Licenses & Experience
To be successful in this position at TAFE NSW, candidates are expected to satisfy the following essential selection criteria:
- Mandatory Qualification: Cert IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40116/TAE40122) & Heavy Commercial Mechanical Trade.
- Relevant Experience: Minimum 3-5 Years of verified industry experience in Australia or recognized overseas equivalence.
- Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (or recognized trade equivalency).
- Current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116 or TAE40122).
- Minimum 5 years recent post-trade industry experience in heavy commercial vehicles or diesel equipment.
- Current NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC).

- Competitive Remuneration: AU$98,000 – AU$118,000 per year + standard Australian Superannuation (11.5%).
- Salary $98,000 – $118,000 + 11.5% super + 12 weeks paid teacher vacation leave per year.
