Lead technical delivery, procurement review, and commissioning of utility-scale grid battery energy storage projects (BESS) across Australia at AGL.

AGL Energy is seeking a dedicated BESS Project Engineer to join our Major Projects Delivery group at 699 Bourke Street, Melbourne. You will drive engineering delivery for multi-hundred-megawatt battery energy storage systems (BESS) co-located at former thermal power stations, managing OEM equipment integration, fire safety design, power conversion systems (PCS), and site commissioning.

As a key member of the team at AGL Energy in Melbourne, VIC, you will play a central role in driving excellence, upholding top-tier Australian industry standards, and contributing directly to the strategic milestones of one of the nation’s premier employers.

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities

In this critical role, your operational duties and key performance responsibilities will encompass:

• Review EPC: Review EPC contractor engineering designs for containerized Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery systems.
• Oversee electrical: Oversee electrical balance of plant (eBoP), MV/HV transformers, switchgear, and inverter PCS packaging.
• Ensure strict: Ensure strict compliance with battery fire safety standards (NFPA 855, AS 5139) and thermal runaway containment.
• Coordinate factory: Coordinate factory witness testing (FAT) and on-site functional commissioning (SAT) with battery OEMs.
• Manage technical: Manage technical risk registers, engineering variation requests, and interface milestones.

Required Qualifications, Licenses & Experience

To be successful in this position at AGL Energy, candidates are expected to satisfy the following essential selection criteria:

• Mandatory Qualification: Degree in Electrical, Renewable Energy, or Mechatronics Engineering.
• Relevant Experience: Minimum 4+ Years of verified industry experience in Australia or recognized overseas equivalence.
• 4+ years of engineering experience on large-scale renewable energy, electrical substation, or industrial battery projects.
• Familiarity with grid-scale BESS technologies, battery management systems (BMS), and energy management systems (EMS).
• Degree in Electrical or Renewable Energy Engineering.
• Strong project engineering discipline, contractor management skills, and safety leadership.

• Competitive Remuneration: AU$135,000 – AU$165,000 per year + standard Australian Superannuation (11.5%).
• Remuneration $135,000 – $165,000 + performance bonus + superannuation.
