Develop visual SLAM navigation, LiDAR perception, and autonomous mobile robot manipulation platforms at the acclaimed QUT Centre for Robotics.
The QUT Centre for Robotics is seeking a talented Senior Robotics & Autonomous Systems Research Engineer to join our world-renowned robotics research team in Brisbane. You will design, build, and field-test autonomous mobile ground robots and aerial drones for environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, and subterranean search-and-rescue, writing robust algorithms in ROS 2 and C++.

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities
In this critical role, your operational duties and key performance responsibilities will encompass:
- Develop, benchmark,: Develop, benchmark, and deploy real-time visual and LiDAR SLAM navigation algorithms on embedded GPU platforms (NVIDIA Jetson).
- Implement robotic: Implement robotic motion planning, obstacle avoidance, and robotic arm manipulation using ROS 2 and MoveIt.
- Integrate multimodal: Integrate multimodal sensors including multi-spectral cameras, 3D LiDAR, IMUs, and RTK-GPS into unified robotic systems.
- Conduct extensive: Conduct extensive outdoor field trials on agricultural farms, mining sites, and coral reef environments.
- Co-author scientific: Co-author scientific publications for premier robotics conferences (ICRA, IROS, RSS) and mentor student research projects.
Required Qualifications, Licenses & Experience
To be successful in this position at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), candidates are expected to satisfy the following essential selection criteria:
- Mandatory Qualification: PhD or Master’s in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
- Relevant Experience: Minimum 5+ Years of verified industry experience in Australia or recognized overseas equivalence.
- 5+ years of hands-on software/hardware robotics engineering experience with mobile autonomous robots.
- Advanced programming proficiency in modern C++ and Python within Linux/ROS 2 environments.
- Demonstrated expertise in SLAM, sensor fusion, computer vision, and state estimation (Kalman filters).
- Master’s or PhD in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering.

- Competitive Remuneration: AU$145,000 – AU$175,000 per year + standard Australian Superannuation (11.5%).
