The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) is currently seeking applications for the role of Expression of Interest: Chapter Lead – ML, Data Science, Gen AI and Agentic AI. Core Responsibilities & Role Scope

In this role at CommBank, key deliverables and operational objectives include:

• Scale advanced machine learning, Gen AI and agentic AI solutions across the Group
• Solve complex challenges to influence high-priority initiatives that protect millions of customers
• Lead modern data science, cloud and engineering tech teams to build and deploy safer production-ready AI
• Lead the design, development and deployment of machine learning, Gen AI and agentic AI solutions, applying advanced statistical methods and structured problem solving to deliver strategic business outcomes and improve customer experiences.
• Drive solutions from experimentation to production while designing and implementing Gen AI capabilities such as RAG, orchestration, guardrails and agentic AI systems.
• Partner across products, engineering, architecture, platform, MLOps, risk and business teams to define problems assess technical trade-offs and expand the responsible use of data science, machine learning and AI.

Selection Criteria & Candidate Profile

CommBank evaluates candidates against demonstrated capabilities aligned with the requisition scope:

• Establish and uplift technical excellence across the chapter, leading best practices while coaching and developing data scientists through technical leadership, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• Proven experience leading teams across machine learning, Gen AI and agentic AI initiatives, technically driving strategy, execution and technical excellence in complex environments.
• Strong technical foundations in statistics, probability, machine learning and AI, supported by a tertiary qualification in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, developing, deploying and evaluating production-grade AI solutions using LLMs, NLP and conversational AI, and the ability to interpret, evaluate and explain model behaviour.
• Advanced engineering and platform expertise in scaling production outcomes using Python, MLOps, SQL and machine learning/deep learning frameworks, with experience integrating AI solutions into enterprise data pipelines.
• Practical deployment using cloud technologies (AWS or Azure), CI/CD, containerisation, monitoring and observability, responsible AI, model governance and risk management.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships across business and risk contexts, influence senior stakeholders and translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.

• Workplace Flexibility: Hybrid (CommBank guideline: at least 50% in-office connection each month).
• Remuneration Benchmark: AU$190,000 – AU$240,000 package + 11.5% Superannuation. (CommBank Executive AI Chapter Lead benchmark.)
