Atlassian is looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Core Platform Services team in Sydney, building distributed microservices that power millions of enterprise users.

As a key member of the team at Atlassian in Sydney, NSW, you will play a central role in driving excellence, upholding top-tier Australian industry standards, and contributing directly to the strategic milestones of one of the nation’s premier employers.

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities

In this critical role, your operational duties and key performance responsibilities will encompass:

• Design, develop,: Design, develop, and scale high-throughput RESTful and gRPC microservices using Python and Go.
• Architect resilient: Architect resilient event-driven data streaming pipelines using Apache Kafka and AWS Kinesis.
• Design and: Design and tune distributed relational databases including PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.
• Implement infrastructure: Implement infrastructure as code using Terraform and deploy onto Kubernetes (EKS).
• Mentor intermediate: Mentor intermediate and associate engineers through comprehensive code reviews.

Required Qualifications, Licenses & Experience

To be successful in this position at Atlassian, candidates are expected to satisfy the following essential selection criteria:

• Mandatory Qualification: Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
• Relevant Experience: Minimum 5+ Years of verified industry experience in Australia or recognized overseas equivalence.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of production experience building and operating distributed backend systems at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Go, or Java.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems principles, concurrency, and database query optimization.

At Atlassian, we understand that our people drive our achievements. An outstanding remuneration and wellbeing package is provided in line with Australian benchmarks:

• Competitive Remuneration: AU$165,000 – AU$210,000 per year + standard Australian Superannuation (11.5%).
• Generous base salary of $165,000 – $210,000 + equity grant (RSUs) + superannuation.
• Atlassian ‘Team Anywhere’ policy: flexible hybrid or 100% remote working options.
• $1,500 annual health and lifestyle allowance + home office setup stipend.
