Technical Domain: Custom Silicon & Specialized Hardware Architecture
Microsoft’s Silicon Engineering organization designs purpose-built custom chips—including the Azure Maia AI accelerator, Azure Cobalt CPU, and advanced security processors—optimized specifically for cloud and frontier AI workloads. Specialists across signal integrity, power integrity, and ASIC verification collaborate closely with system architects and foundry partners. Their objective is maximizing compute density, optimizing power envelope efficiency, and delivering deterministic performance across planetary datacenter fleets.
Professionals in this specialization combine strong computer science fundamentals with practical, real-world systems engineering. Key Responsibilities & Scope of Work
In this capacity, your daily priorities and core technical contributions will center on the following key operational deliverables:
- Design and build best-in-class fleet resiliency systems for storage devices at scale
- Develop scalable live monitoring capabilities, fault detection and repair solutions
- Design features for SSDs, HDDs and Storage Accelerator firmware deployment
- Lead collaboration projects with hardware, firmware and software teams that fault reduction projects
- Build automation to drive repair efficiency for storage operations in the production fleet
- Collaborate with suppliers to design reliable, high performance and quality storage devices
- Analyze data to identify, prototype, and drive the implementation of technical and process improvements to increase the predictability, agility, and quality of Azure systems
- Maintain rigorous code quality, comprehensive automated test coverage, and security compliance throughout all phases of software delivery.
- Participate actively in technical design reviews, operational post-mortems, and architectural discussions across global engineering cohorts.
Candidate Profile & Experience Requirements

- Professional Background: Minimum of 3 years (36 months) of verified experience directly relevant to hardware engineering or related technical specializations.
- Required/minimum qualifications Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience

Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical or equivalent experience 10+ years of SSD firmware engineering development experience 6+ years of NVMe and PCIe experience Deep expertise in storage device resiliency, fault analysis, and live‑site operations. Lead end‑to‑end design decisions across detection, prediction, mitigation, and repair of SSDs in hyper scale environment. Design component‑ reliability frameworks that work across different components Proven ability to build automation heavy systems that operate safely at hyperscale.
- B.S. Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of SSD firmware engineering development experience
- 6+ years of NVMe and PCIe experience
- Technical Competence: Demonstrated mastery of programming environments, distributed systems, modern cloud infrastructure, or specialized analytical methodologies relevant to the domain.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an established ability to articulate complex technical architectures clearly to engineering peers and executive stakeholders.
