Airwallex is hiring a Lead Go Backend Engineer in Melbourne to build global payment clearing and foreign exchange transaction engines.

Airwallex is seeking a Lead Backend Software Engineer to head our Global Clearing & Settlement engineering pod in Melbourne. You will architect high-resilience, multi-currency payment rails connecting to SWIFT, direct clearing networks, and central banking systems across 50+ countries.

As a key member of the team at Airwallex in Melbourne, VIC, you will play a central role in driving excellence, upholding top-tier Australian industry standards, and contributing directly to the strategic milestones of one of the nation’s premier employers.

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities

In this critical role, your operational duties and key performance responsibilities will encompass:

• Architect and: Architect and code low-latency, concurrent financial transaction engines in Go (Golang).
• Build idempotent: Build idempotent event-driven settlement pipelines using Apache Kafka and distributed locks.
• Enforce strict: Enforce strict cryptographic security, double-entry ledger consistency, and financial audit trails.
• Lead and: Lead and mentor a pod of talented backend engineers, driving architectural decisions.

Required Qualifications, Licenses & Experience

To be successful in this position at Airwallex, candidates are expected to satisfy the following essential selection criteria:

• Mandatory Qualification: Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
• Relevant Experience: Minimum 5+ Years of verified industry experience in Australia or recognized overseas equivalence.
• 7+ years experience designing backend distributed systems, with deep expertise in Go or Java.
• Prior commercial background in fintech, payments, banking, or crypto infrastructure.
• Solid grasp of relational database isolation levels, ACID transactions, and distributed systems.

• Competitive Remuneration: AU$175,000 – AU$225,000 per year + standard Australian Superannuation (11.5%).
